Chozen Youth/Young Adult of the Month -- Brian A. West
Brian A. West is from Mt. Olive, NC, born on January 21, 1985 to Brenda Usher and Roosevelt West Jr. Brian attended Carver Elementary School from K-5, where his initial interest in sports began, but basketball was his first and true love.
Entering middle school Brian experienced some behavioral challenges. He began acting out is class, which caused him to be transferred several times to different educational settings, but his love for basketball kept him grounded and focused, which ultimately assisted him in getting back into the normal classroom setting at Mt. Olive Jr. High.
Brian attended Southern Wayne High School in Dudley, NC, where his basketball career began to take flight. Displaying leadership skills on and off the court Brian became very successful in basketball leading his team to winning a Jr. Varsity Championship, 2 Christmas Tournaments, 2 Conference Championships, 3 Most Valuable Player Awards, an All-conference Championship and many individual awards.
In 2004 Brian attended Brunswick Community College where he also played basketball, placing them #1 in the region. Brian and his team won the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association, better known as the CIAA, conference that year, which gave the community college the ability to install their own gym facilities. A huge accomplishment for a small community college, who previously played and practiced in the local high school gym.
Brian transferred to Elizabeth City State University in 2005 also winning his second ring from the CIAA conference there. Gaining life experience, a college education, and a successful athletic career Brian left Elizabeth City State University with an associate’s degree and a one way ticket to success.
Brain West is currently the head Junior Varsity coach at his alma mater high school, Southern Wayne High School and assistant on the varsity team there as well. Brian continues to play semi-pro basketball with Big Texas Basketball Team in Jacksonville, NC.
He is very active in the community assisting the elderly and living his passion of working with youth in the community through sports. When asked who were the most influential people in his life, Brian stated his parents because they groomed him to be the humble and determined young man he is today, Martin Luther King Jr. because of the sacrifices he made for others to live a better life and teaching him to overcome adversity, and Michael Jordan, who taught him to have character on and off the court, and God, who is not a person but his strength, his provider, his guide, and his covering. Brian’s motto is, “Be patient, Be kind, Be still, and Be Praying cause with God Almighty where there is a is a will, there’s a way.”
Thank you Brian A West for all that you do to serve in the community, in your family, amongst your student players, and basketball arena.
You are an inspiration to us all and God’s CHOZEN!!!
